Aamir Khan was born on March 14th, 1965 to Tahir Hussain, a film producer. Hence, Aamir Khan grew up in a filmi background. As a child, he was very naughty, but very talented too. As a child, Aamir acted in his uncle Nasir Hussain's films, Yaadon Ki Baraat (1973) and Madhosh. When he was 12, He won the state tennis championship in Maharashtra. He studied at Bombay Scottish and graduated from N.M. College, Mumbai. He joined FTII, where he not only learnt acting, but also realised the hard work behind other aspects of film making. When he went into his teens, He fell in love with his neighbour’s daughter, Reena Dutta, and they went on to marry secretly until it was revealed in 1988.
Aamir Khan made his debut in Ketan Mehta’s Holi (1984), which got him noticed by the critics. But his actual entry in the film industry happened in 1988 when his cousin Mansoor Khan made Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988), starring him and Juhi Chawla. Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak was a huge blockbuster, and got him a strong foothold in the industry. It established Aamir as the chocolate hero and a teen sensation.
After 2 years and a string of flops, Aamir Khan made a come back with Indra Kumar’s Dil (1990), which broke all Box-office records that year. His other successful films in that period were Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin (1991), Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander (1992) and Hum Hai Raahi Pyaar Ke (1993). But soon, Aamir Khan became very choosy about films, and began doing only one-two films a year. Ever since then, he has been very consistent at the Box-Office. His other notable films were Andaz Apna Apna (1994), Rangeela (1995), and one of the biggest hits of the 90s, Raja Hindustani (1996) Later he acted in Ghulam (1998), Sarfarosh (1999) and 1947–Earth (1999), which remains his most acclaimed performance till now. He re-wrote Indian film history by giving two cult films back to back, namely Lagaan (2001) and Dil Chahta Hai (2001). Lagaan went on to represent India that year at the Oscars in the foreign film category, and got shortlisted in the top 5. However, it lost to "No Man's Land" from Bosnia. It was during this period that he got his nick name “The Perfectionist”, due to his analytical and professional approach to acting.
Although Aamir Khan delivered successful films at regular intervals, He also saw a few failures occasionally, most of them being in the beginning of his career. After Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, he gave some forgettable films like Tum Mere Ho (1989), Love Love Love (1989) and Jawani Zindabad (1990). Also, when he was at the peak of his career after Sarfarosh (1999), his Mann (1999) and Mela (2000) failed to live upto the expectations at the Box-office. And 5 years later, his comeback film after his 4 year long hiatus The Rising (2005), directed by Ketan Mehta, proved to be a damp squib. But none of these failures deterred Aamir from doing films that he wanted to, with out compromising on the quality. He came back in 2006 with two Big Blockbusters Rang De Basanti (2006) and Fanaah (2006). And then, when he could have banked on his much-coveted success by signing many more films, he decided to become a director instead, and made Taare Zameen Par (2007), which not only got acclaimed by Critics but also went on to become a hit. After the success of TZP, he launched his nephew (his cousin sister Nuzhat's son), Imran Khan in Jaane Tu Yaa Jaane Na. Aamir led a big campaign to promote the relatively small films and it became a surprise hit. Imran became the craze of the nation and Aamir delivered back to back superhit films as producer.
He is currently shooting for Ghajini, a remake of a Tamil film. He has gone bald for the character. He recently injured himself in the shoot, thus delaying the shoot and the release of the film.
Aamir doesnt believe in popular awards (he doesn’t agree with their criteria of selecting winners) and thus doesn't attend awards. He has, however, won Filmfare Awards (for Best Actor) for Lagaan (2001), Raja Hindustani (1996), Rang De Basanti (2006) for Best actor. He also won Best Film award for Lagaan (2001) and Best debut award for Qayamat se Qayamat Tak in 1988. He also won two National Awards, one of them being for Best film for Lagaan in 2002, and the other in 1989 as a Special Jury award for his work in Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak and Raakh.
