From Fendi's prim trim waist-lines and Alexander McQueen's slim-waisted senoritas to Stella McCartney's shirt dresses with leather tie-ups, the trend moves eastward to Tarun Tahiliani's "obi" cinched saris, Shantanu & Nikhil's high trousers and Aparna Chandra's gathered dressesAs if couture, diffusion and pret-a-porter weren't confusing enough, fashion followers will now deal with "Luxury pret". Even as it is being heralded as the new fashion statement, Delhi's latest fashion destination Ayamik is taking on the onus of creating an "opulent pret" line. Says propreitor Pradip Hirani, "Diffusion is a confused and misused term. Luxury pret is refined pret with the right balance of embellishment and a dominant international silhouette." The term first gained credence when Gaby Aghion, the founder of Chloe, created elegant apparel from fine fabrics and called it "luxury pret-a-porter". Suneet Verma calls it "western silhouettes in luxurious fabrics, more exclusive than store pret". Their lives' journeys are thus invariably worth telling. "These are stories to be told and retold. They recall an era," says eminent vocalist Girija Devi, whose biography Girija: A Journey Through Thumri, has been written by Yatindra Mishra in Hindi and translated into English by Madhu B. Joshi. This worthy volume apart, a clutch of artistes' biographies are lining the shelves in bookshops. The other releases include: The Lost World of Hindustani Music by the late Kumar Prasad Mukherjee, Mallikarujun Mansur-Rasa Yatra by Rajshekhar Mansur, Maya Rao by Ashish Mohan Khokar, and Movement in Still: The Dance and Life of Kumudini Lakhia by Reena Shah. The state-funded Akademis, which are supposed to record and document India's culture, have hardly published any biographical accounts on artistes. The few they may have done largely remain confined to their own archives. So, the initiative taken by private publishers is commendable."Maya Rao is a celebration of the dancer's life. A record of 50 years of glorious dancing is a valid historical document," says Khokar. Mukherjee's book is remarkable for its colourful chronicle of many a musical giant, from Kesarbai to Bhimsen Joshi. The best parts of the book are the lively personality sketches of the masters. It also analyses the history of creativity in Hindustani music, the cross-fertilisation of influences among gharanas and the human side of musical legends like Ustad Faiyaz Khan. It is an elegy to a vanishing age of musical legends. Shah's book on Kumudini Lakhia explores the dilemma of the modern innovator in the traditional realm of Kathak. In Rasa Yatra, Mansur tells the story of his father-a humble sadhak (devotee) of classical music who rose from poverty to great heights in the post-Independence culture scene. Lucidly written, it is a truthful exposition with depth, emotion and poignancy.HYDERABAD Splendid Secunderabad. Kashmir appears in the opening shots of the movie. The rest of the time, Poland stands in for the troubled state-fittingly so. It's a fake location for a fake cause. Kohli's Fanaa is perfect when it is in Yash Chopra country. The chiffon-clad heroine in snow-clad mountains, the dhols suggesting the beating of two meeting hearts, the purple poetry borrowed from Kabhie Kabhie, and the autumn leaves from Mohabbatein-all as familiarly comforting as warm milk with Bournvita on a winter's night. Kajol looks utterly ravishing and Aamir Khan as the shahzada-turned-shaitan is note perfect. The trouble begins in the second half when Kohli goes into James Bond territory, making Khan an international man of mystery who jumps off helicopters onto skis and then snowmobiles. Worse, he gives Khan a cause too heavy to carry: independence for Kashmir, a nation free not only of India but also of Pakistan. With violence as his only means (and a nuclear trigger, no less), Khan is given a shadowy mentor laughably called Nana-jan and silly dialogue about a "sipahi ki zindagi". The secondary characters, fine actors like Rishi Kapoor and Tabu, look like intruders. Bravo Bollywood. For so long denied the chance to exploit Kashmir's beauty, it has succeeded in exploiting its unending terror
BANGALORE Want to see pictures of Amartya Sen cycling down a road or hear John Nash's acceptance speech at the Nobel ceremony? "The Centennial Exhibition of the Nobel Prize" is drawing big crowds at the Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum in the city for this very reason. Artefacts belonging to Nobel laureates, voices of different winners making their acceptance speeches, the seat of the Nobel in Stockholm and many other little things make it worthwhile to drop in at the exhibition that will continue in the city for the next three months. Michael Sohlman, the executive director of the Nobel shop for tiffany bracelets, said he considered Bangalore "a very advanced city" and decided it should host the exhibition, which also has a series of video clippings, miniature models and photographs to mark the Nobel ceremonies held over the years.DELHI Kashmir Views is an exhibition of black-and-white prints by the late lensman Ram Chand Mehta and it showcases his work between 1930 and 1965. Having founded the legendary Mahatta's, a photo studio in Kashmir in 1918, Mehta spent over three decades exploring the lush valley, capturing its landscape and people on film. With tireless imagination and insight, he soon amassed a collection of photographs, several thousand in number, covering Kashmir's terrain and seasons, its rural culture, majestic royals and some milestones in history. Despite the subjects being commonplace, his photographs stand out for their spontaneity and unexplored angles as well as intelligent use of natural light. Be it royals with their hunts or tall poplars and snow-clad banks, Mehta's lens transports one to the Kashmir of yore. Apart from prints made from the original negatives in different formats, the exhibition will also display Mehta's cameras, accessories, implements from his darkroom and some hand-coloured archival prints made and supervised by him over half a century ago. The exhibition has been organised by photo stock agency India Picture and will be on at Visual Arts Gallery from June 2 to June 8.
